In 1861, a young woman from a prominent Hispanic family in Las Vegas, New Mexico, was convicted of murdering her lover after he ended their affair. She became the first—and only—woman in New Mexico to be sentenced to death. The sentence was carried out under questionable legal procedures and amid significant public outcry. Her execution by hanging remains one of the most controversial and lesser-known episodes in the state’s legal history.
